How do I get toads and other small animals out of the ground of my garden before tilling?
I want toads in my garden during the growing season, they eat bugs and they're cute. The problem is that they burrow into the soil to get through the Winter and when we till up the soil in early Spring they can be injured. This happened to a toad a few weeks ago when we were filling in the first plant bed. I felt terrible, but there was nothing I could do, so I'd like to see if there's some trick to disturb small animals and get them to emerge a few days before we start work. I know it's a weird question, but I don't want any more casualties in my garden!
