What other parts in the engine can a charcoal canister thats bad cause?

Whenever my check engine light came on and was checked they said it was because the charcoal canister was messed up and that if i don't fix it soon it can cause many other problems with parts of the engine. Does anyone know what the other parts it may effect are?
